What "no submission under review" means for retatrutide

Health Canada publishes a list of the new drugs it has accepted for review. A company files a submission, Health Canada screens it, and once it is accepted the drug's name appears on that list. It is the first public sign that a medicine is on its way to a decision.

Retatrutide is not on it. I checked the version current to August 31, 2026. For contrast, Lilly's obesity pill, orforglipron, is on the list. So this is not a case of a company that files late in Canada as a habit. Retatrutide has not reached that stage anywhere: Lilly has said it plans its first filing, in the United States, in the first quarter of 2027.

One caveat. The list shows submissions Health Canada has accepted, so a filing made a few weeks ago could exist without showing yet. Eli Lilly Canada has not announced one.

Why retatrutide is not available in Canada yet

Because the paperwork has not started. The large trials only finished reporting in 2026, and a regulator cannot review a drug until its maker asks. After a filing, Health Canada's own targets add up to most of a year before a decision. Our retatrutide approval timeline lays out each step and what has been dated so far.

Retatrutide clinical trials in Canada

Here is the part most coverage leaves out. Canadians have been taking retatrutide since 2023, inside trials. The registry lists 10 retatrutide studies with sites in this country.

One of them is open. As of October 5, 2026, SYNERGY-Outcomes lists recruiting sites in Canada. Before you get your hopes up, read the fine print.

  • It is a trial in fatty liver disease, known as MASLD. It is not an obesity trial.
  • Participants are assigned at random to retatrutide, tirzepatide or placebo, and nobody chooses.
  • Entry criteria are specific, and the study team decides who qualifies.
  • It plans to enroll 4,500 people worldwide and the registry estimates it runs until August 2030.

Where the recruiting Canadian sites are

On October 5, 2026, the registry record for SYNERGY-Outcomes showed sites recruiting in Chicoutimi, Edmonton, North Bay, Québec City, Toronto and Trois-Rivières. It also listed sites in Calgary, Halifax, London, Vancouver and Winnipeg that had not started recruiting. Site statuses change often, so treat this as a snapshot.

The obesity trials with Canadian sites are finished or closed to new participants. To see what is open on any given day, search ClinicalTrials.gov for retatrutide and filter by country. A site listing is not a place in a study, so the next step is always a call to the site.

What joining a retatrutide trial involves

A trial is not a back door to a prescription. It is research, and it comes with trade-offs that are easy to miss when you want the drug.

  • You might be assigned a comparison drug or a placebo, and you may not learn which until the study ends.
  • Expect regular visits, blood tests and questionnaires for as long as the study runs.
  • The study team decides whether you qualify. Wanting to take part is not enough.
  • Taking part is voluntary, and you can leave at any point.

Is retatrutide available in Ontario, BC, Alberta or Quebec?

The answer is the same in every province and territory, because drug authorization in Canada is federal. Health Canada decides whether a medicine can be sold anywhere in the country. No province can approve one early, and none has a separate route.

Provinces come into it later. Once a drug is authorized, each one decides whether its public plan will pay and for whom. That is why coverage for the same medicine can differ between Ontario and Alberta. For retatrutide that stage is a long way off, since there is nothing authorized to cover.

Can a doctor get retatrutide through the Special Access Program?

Health Canada's Special Access Program lets a doctor ask for a drug that is not sold here, for one named patient. People ask about it often, so here is how the published criteria read.

The patient must have a serious or life-threatening condition, and conventional treatments must have been considered and ruled out, have failed, be unsuitable, or be unavailable. Authorized weight-management medicines are sold in Canada, which bears on that test. Whether it could ever apply to you is a clinical call for your own doctor.

There is a second gate, and it matters more. A Special Access authorization lets the manufacturer send the drug; it does not make it. Health Canada says drugs accessed this way are supplied directly by manufacturers to practitioners, so Eli Lilly and Company would have to agree, one patient at a time.

Lilly's early-access program

Lilly does now say yes in some cases. On August 5, 2026, it confirmed that doctors can request retatrutide for patients who cannot join a trial, reviewed case by case ahead of FDA approval. News reports describe the criteria as narrow: adults with obesity that has not responded to approved treatment and with serious complications already under care. The reports are about the United States, and none I found says whether Lilly accepts requests from Canadian doctors. If you think you might qualify, that is a question your doctor can put to Eli Lilly Canada directly. I still would not plan around it.

What is available in Canada now

If the goal is a weekly injectable for weight management, two are authorized.

  • Wegovy (semaglutide). Health Canada authorized it for chronic weight management in November 2021.
  • Zepbound (tirzepatide). Eli Lilly Canada announced it as approved and available for obesity in July 2025. It comes from the same company as retatrutide and is the drug retatrutide is being tested against.

Both need a prescription, and coverage varies by plan and province. If cost is the obstacle, ask the prescriber's office or your insurer what your plan covers before you fill anything. Many plans need a form completed first.

For what each one costs at Canadian pharmacies, our sister site tracks it by province and dose: Wegovy prices in Canada and Zepbound prices in Canada.

This site tracks one unapproved drug and does not recommend a treatment. A prescriber can tell you whether either of these fits your situation, and whether waiting for a newer option makes sense for you.

What changes when a retatrutide submission reaches Health Canada

Less than you might hope, at first. Here is the order of events.

  1. Eli Lilly Canada files. Nothing is announced by the regulator on that day.
  2. Health Canada screens the file. If it is complete, the drug's name is added to the public list.
  3. The review runs for months. The drug stays unavailable throughout.
  4. A decision is issued. Only then does a legal product exist.

So a headline that says "retatrutide filed in Canada" will not mean you can get it. It will mean the wait finally has a starting line.

Why some websites say retatrutide is available in Canada

Because they are selling something. A page that says "in stock" or "ships from Canada" is describing an unauthorized product, not a change in the drug's legal status. The same goes for clinics that advertise it. No clinic in this country has an approved retatrutide to offer, whatever its website says.

How to check retatrutide's Canadian status yourself

You do not have to take my word for any of this. Three public records will tell you the day something changes.

  1. The Submissions Under Review list. Health Canada updates it regularly. When retatrutide appears under new drug submissions, the review has begun.
  2. The Drug Product Database. Every authorized drug has an eight-digit DIN and an entry here. Search "retatrutide." Today it returns nothing.
  3. The trial registry. ClinicalTrials.gov shows which studies list Canadian sites and whether they are recruiting.

Each page on this site carries the date it was last checked against those records. If this one says it was checked this month and nothing above has changed, nothing has moved.

What about retatrutide sold online in Canada?

Search results will show you sellers. That does not make the drug available here in any lawful sense. Health Canada has seized products labelled as retatrutide and says selling unauthorized drugs is illegal. What those vials are, and what the import rules say, is covered on our page about buying retatrutide in Canada.

When will retatrutide be available in Canada?

No date exists, and anyone printing one is guessing. The firm facts are short: a US filing is planned for the first quarter of 2027, and no Canadian filing has been announced. For what the drug is, how it works and why the wait might be worth following, start with what retatrutide is.

Common questions

Is retatrutide available in Canada?

No. Health Canada has not authorized retatrutide, and its list of new drug submissions under review, current to August 31, 2026, has no entry for it. It cannot be prescribed, dispensed or sold in Canada.

Is retatrutide approved by Health Canada?

No. Approval in Canada takes the form of a Notice of Compliance, and none has been issued. Eli Lilly Canada has not announced a submission. No regulator in any other country has approved retatrutide either.

Is retatrutide legal in Canada?

It is not legal to sell. Health Canada states that unauthorized drug products are illegal in Canada and that injectable peptides are regulated as prescription drugs. The lawful ways to receive it here are an authorized clinical trial or, rarely, a doctor’s request to Health Canada’s Special Access Program, which Eli Lilly would also have to agree to supply.

Is retatrutide available in Ontario, Alberta, BC or Quebec?

No, and the answer is the same in every province and territory. Drug authorization is federal, so Health Canada decides for the whole country. Provinces only decide what their public plans pay for, after a drug is authorized.

Can a Canadian doctor prescribe retatrutide?

No. A doctor can only prescribe a drug that Health Canada has authorized, and a pharmacy can only dispense one. Retatrutide has no Drug Identification Number, so there is nothing to write a prescription for.

Can I join a retatrutide clinical trial in Canada?

Possibly, if you fit a narrow group. As of October 5, 2026, one registered trial that includes retatrutide lists recruiting sites in Canada: SYNERGY-Outcomes, for adults with fatty liver disease. Participants are assigned at random to retatrutide, tirzepatide or placebo. The obesity trials with Canadian sites are closed to new participants.

What can I take in Canada while retatrutide is unavailable?

Two weekly injections are authorized for weight management: Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide). Whether either suits you is a question for a Canadian prescriber. This site does not recommend a treatment.
